A few days ago I was invited to the River Island press office to attend their Christmas 15 press days, It was a great opportunity to see the upcoming collection and get an inside scoop on the inspiration behind it. I know it seems too early to be getting festive but given the fashion world works months in advance July is all about the Christmas collections. River Island are currently in the process of relaunching their menswear offering, moving towards a fashion led collection with a huge focus on the design and fabrication of the pieces. It’s been an interesting few months as the brand was a key sponsor of LC:M where they premiered their fashion film for their upcoming collaboration with Christopher Shannon.
For Christmas 2015 you can expect a very dark colour palette, as usual black is a core colour which is broken up with greys, khaki and white. Texture is used to break up the monochrome, with everything from neoprene to suede giving the pieces their key selling points. There was a big authoritarian feel throughout the trends, with the outerwear and tailoring being reminiscent of uniforms in recent dystopian blockbusters. There was an impressive range of leather jackets which really worked with the all black looks, the charcoal greys helped give an underlying grunge feel – 90’s styling refreshed with modern silhouettes. I was really impressed by the collection and the clear passion from the team behind the relaunch of menswear for River Island, with so many competitors getting stagnant it’s really interesting to see River Island upping the stakes in the mens fashion market.
